Deep regret was felt in Balintore and district when Mrs. James Allan, Port Street, received the sad news that her elder son James had passed away at Lerwick Combination Hospital. James, who was only 17 years of age in February, had been acting as stoker on board Ins. Phase on which his father was the engineer. During the week word had been sent home by the father that the lad was not very well, but no serious result was anticipated until Mrs Allan received a kindly letter from the Matron of Lerwick Combination Hospital, intimating that James had been admitted there, suffering from cerebro spinal meningitis, or what it is generally known as spotted fever. On Saturday, the Rev D. Campbell, U.F. Church [Continuing] of whose congregation the deceased was a devoted adherent, received a telegram from Lerwick to convey to the mother and family the sad news that the illness had proved fatal, and that the deceased was interred on Saturday in Lerwick Churchyard, the funeral being attended by the crew of the Phase. The sudden, sad death of such a promising young man has cast gloom over the villages where the deceased, his parents and other relatives are highly respected. Possessed of a winning, affectionate disposition, James beautiful Christian life was evidenced as an exemplary son and brother, while his integrity of heart and his fine manly disposition endeared him to his companions. To the stricken parents, brothers, sisters and other relatives the deepest sympathy of the whole community is extended in their sad and sudden bereavement.
