Constable Ross Balfour of Hilton has been awarded the British Empire Medal for gallantry, the highest award that can be given to a policeman for bravery.

While on service with the British Airports Authority Constabulary at London Airport on the 3rd of December 1971. Ross was called to disturbance at No1 terminal, a man with a gun was reported, Ross followed the gunman into the toilets, the gun was aimed at Ross and man said ‘don’t come any closer’, Ross said ‘don’t be daft’ and then dived at man and wrestled the gun away from him, the culprit was then arrested.

The British Empire Medal was presented by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second at Buckingham Palace too Ross.
